Set to play tomorrow as the 64-65 matchup, Morehead State (in Kentucky) squares off agaisnt Alabama State (in Alabama). So what you, loyal FranchiseThis reader are about to get, is a preview of this game.
Morehead State was 19-15 this year and won an double OT thriller to win the Ohio Valley Conference tournament as the 4th seed. They have a strong frontcourt with their 3 forwards as their top scorers, all averaging in double figures. They have a great home record at 12-1 and a pretty ugly road record at 3-12. Keep in mind teams from these smaller conferences go play tougher games, two of their road losses were Vanderbilt and (gasp) Louisville. However, the road record is a concern, but this could be mitigated by the fact that the game will be played in Dayton, a 3 hour drive away from campus.
Alabama State was 22-9 this year and beat Jackson state to win the Southwest Athletic Conference tournament after winning the regular season title. They’re lead by their two strong guards, Brandon Brooks and Andrew Hayless, who each average over 13 ppg. Three of their losses came this year against Alabama, Mississippi and Mississippi State, so they also have played some tougher games. They’re an even 8-8 on the road this year. Most importantly, their center’s name is Chief Kickingstallionsims. Yea, that’s right, you read that correct. How fricking sweet is that name.
Alabama State is the kind of team that has dominated their level of play all year long, winning 14 of their last 15 to close out the season, while Morehead State pulled off upsets to win their conference tournament (they lost 4 straight conference games at one point late in the season). I think Alabama State (powered by one of the sweetest names ever) takes care of powerhouse Morehead State to earn the right to get their asses handed to them by Louisville’s leisure suit army.
